Julie Plec promised that the ultimate question of Elena's choice between Damon and Stefan will unfold in "The Vampire Diaries" season 3 finale. Talking about the highly anticipated moment, the executive producer spilled, "It will not be easy. It will be very emotional for both sides because it's going to be a very honest, very pure, very difficult decision."
Whatever the outcome will be, Plec hinted that they have prepared fans for Elena's decision. "Hopefully if we've done our jobs right with Elena's character over the season, we'll understand why she's making the decision that she's making," she said, "and how that decision is meant to be right for where she is in her life right now."
Further gushing about the season ender, Plec said it was very emotional for her writing the finale. "I cried many, many times... But it was a very, very emotional experience writing the finale, for a lot of reasons," she teased. One part that will likely bring tears to fans' eyes is a flashback that will see Elena's adoptive parents when they're still alive.
"It's just a really poignant, sweet and bittersweet reflection back to a time when life was so much simpler for all of our humans and former humans," Plec described the scenes. "I hope it turns out as well as we want it to because it's a really special episode."
While The CW has not officially picked up "TVD" for season 4, Plec revealed the writers have been mapping out ideas for the possible new season. She claimed, "We've got a lot going on, a lot of really amazing character moves, great romance, a new mystery, a new villain and I'm really excited about it. We're feeling pretty good about it already and we've only been talking about it for two weeks."
The final chapter of "TVD" will start Thursday, April 19, with the final episode airing on May 10.
